Why choose PNG over JPG for HEIC conversion

JPG is the most compatible choice for sharing photos, but it's lossy — every save introduces a small amount of degradation. PNG is lossless: every pixel from your original HEIC photo is preserved exactly. If you're editing the image after conversion, or archiving it for later use, PNG is the better format.

The trade-off is file size. A PNG from a 12-megapixel iPhone photo will be substantially larger than the JPG equivalent. For long-term archiving or professional editing workflows, that's an acceptable trade. For casual sharing or uploading to social media, convert to JPG instead.

Common questions

Are HEIC to PNG conversions truly lossless?
The HEIC decoder introduces a small amount of rounding when converting to an 8-bit RGBA bitmap, so the result isn't bit-for-bit identical to a theoretical lossless decode. In practice, the difference is imperceptible and the PNG output preserves all visible detail from your original photo.
Why are the PNG files so large?
PNG uses lossless compression. A 12MP photo encoded as PNG is typically 10–20 MB compared to 3–5 MB as JPG. If file size matters, use JPG or WebP.
Can I convert HEIF files too?
Yes. HEIF and HEIC refer to the same format and are handled identically.
